Dr. Shawn Gutman
Orthodontist
Dr. Shawn Gutman received his DDS from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. He then stayed at Columbia to complete his specialty training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. During residency, Dr. Gutman received the Thomas Cangialosi Award for clinical excellence, an honor given to the top two residents in each graduating year. He has extended his commitment to education by holding a part-time clinical faculty position at Columbia, where he teaches the current residents. Dr. Gutman is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (board certified).
Dr. Gutman did not have a traditional journey into orthodontics. During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Gutman obtained his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University. After feeling unfulfilled as an engineer, he went back to school for dentistry. He finds that orthodontics is the perfect amalgamation of engineering and dentistry; it is a career in which he can utilize both of his educational backgrounds.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Gutman has participated in dental mission trips with the Phillips Renner Foundation. With this organization he has traveled to various countries, including Cambodia, South Africa, and the Philippines to provide dental education and emergency treatment to underprivileged children.
